Early detection and timely management of glaucoma are essential to helping patients preserve their vision against this insidious group of diseases. What Is Glaucoma Subspecialty?

Dr. Richard Gordon is a glaucoma subspecialist, meaning he has undertaken years of specialized training in glaucoma treatment, diagnosis, and management. He is experienced in using laser technology, implanted devices, and other methods of treating glaucoma.

Laser Iridotomy

If you suffer from closed-angle glaucoma, or if you are at high risk of this condition, our doctors may suggest that you undergo a laser iridotomy. He uses a laser to create an opening in the outer edge of the iris, which improves fluid drainage and lowers the intraocular pressure that can cause damage to the optic nerve.

Trabeculectomy

Dr. Gordon may recommend a trabeculectomy in certain cases of both open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma. During this procedure, he refines tissue to allow ocular fluid to drain out of the eye and into the tears, relieving pressure and helping to prevent damage to the optic nerve.

Trabeculoplasty

Trabeculoplasty is a laser procedure used to treat patients with open-angle glaucoma. During treatment, Dr. Gordon removes a small amount of tissue from the trabecular meshwork, the tissue at the base of the cornea, to improve drainage and reduce intraocular pressure.

Nonsurgical Treatments

Patients with less advanced cases of glaucoma can often find relief through nonsurgical treatments. Glaucoma eye drops can relax ocular muscles, reduce fluid production, or improve circulation. Some patients require oral medications which can be used in conjunction with eyedrops.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)

There are some newer glaucoma procedures that do not require as much cutting into the eye. These procedures are called MIGS, or microinvasive glaucoma surgeries. Many of these surgeries can be combined with cataract surgery for people with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma. Dr. Gordon is experienced in these techniques including placement of iStent Inject®, Hydrus Microstent®, Xen Gel Stent®, and the Omni Surgical System®. Dr. Gordon will help you decide which procedure is best for you during your evaluation.
